I Did Everything Right and Still Felt Lost
· Story by XXX
Illustrative story. Names and details are changed. This is a composite written to reflect common experiences, not an account from a specific customer.
I did what was expected. Engineering degree, MBA, consulting firm, promotion track. My parents were proud. My LinkedIn was clean. My life, from the outside, was a success story.
Inside I kept asking a question I couldn't shut up: is this mine? Did I choose this, or did I follow the path of least resistance and call it choice?
This felt like a luxury problem. I knew people who were struggling with real hardship. Who was I to feel lost when I had a good salary and a career? So I said nothing. I worked harder. I got another promotion. The question got louder.
I needed somewhere I could say this without being told I was ungrateful. Without someone pointing at my salary and calling it a solution. Friendyouneed felt right because the conversation would be genuinely private — nothing stored, no notes, no record of me having an existential crisis while I was supposed to be executing Q3 strategy.
My listener asked me something that cracked the whole thing open: "If nobody was watching, what would you be doing?" I couldn't answer immediately. I sat with it for days. But the fact that it had no easy answer told me everything.
I haven't quit my job. I haven't dramatically changed direction. But I have started a project on the side that's entirely mine. I've started having the conversations I'd been avoiding. I know what I actually want now — even if I'm still working out how to get there. That clarity came from one honest conversation with someone who had no stake in what I decided.
