Dr. Google Was Ruining My Life and I Couldn't Stop

Illustrative story. Names and details are changed. This is a composite written to reflect common experiences, not an account from a specific customer.

It started with a headache that lasted three days. By the time I'd finished Googling, I had convinced myself of four different serious diagnoses, had scheduled an emergency GP appointment, and was drafting mental goodbyes to people in my head.

The headache was tension. From stress. Probably from Googling.

"The cycle was: feel a symptom, Google it, find a frightening answer, feel more anxious, develop more symptoms, Google those too. I couldn't find the exit."

As a founder, I had additional layers: the fear of being too unwell to run the company, the pressure to appear strong and in control, the impossibility of admitting to anyone that I was spending three hours a day down medical rabbit holes.

I needed something with genuine privacy. My health anxieties were embarrassing — the catastrophising, the irrationality, the knowledge that I was doing it and the inability to stop. Nothing stored, no record of me admitting this to anyone. Friendyouneed gave me that.

My listener helped me understand something that changed the whole pattern: health anxiety isn't about health. It's about the need for certainty in a world that doesn't provide it. Googling was my attempt to get certainty. It was never going to work — it just generates more uncertainty.

"Health anxiety isn't really about health. It's about needing certainty that the world cannot give you. Once I understood that, I could work with it."

I still notice symptoms. I still occasionally Google. But I now have a name for the pattern and an understanding of what's driving it. That understanding has reduced the cycle's power significantly. I don't follow every symptom all the way down anymore.
