You don't need a one-hour yoga session or a meditation retreat. Five intentional minutes — before you check your phone — can completely rewire the tone of your entire day. Here's the simple science and practice behind it.

Most mornings begin the same way — eyes open, phone picked up, notifications checked before a single breath has been taken with intention. By the time you've scrolled for four minutes, your nervous system is already reacting to other people's urgency.
"The first five minutes of your morning set the emotional tone for everything that follows. Most of us hand them to our phones without noticing."
The good news: you don't need a meditation cushion, an app subscription, or an hour of free time. Research in cognitive neuroscience consistently shows that even brief moments of intentional stillness — before stimulus hits — measurably reduce cortisol and improve emotional regulation throughout the day.
The 5-Minute Practice
Minute 1: Lie still. Notice five physical sensations — temperature, weight, sound, breath, texture. Don't interpret. Just notice.
Minute 2: Three slow breaths. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat three times.
Minute 3: Name one thing you're looking forward to today. Doesn't have to be significant. Coffee counts.
Minute 4: Set a single intention — not a to-do list. One quality: patience, focus, kindness, presence.
Minute 5: Sit up. One more breath. Now reach for your phone.
This isn't magic. It's a small act of choosing how your day begins rather than reacting to how it arrives. Do it for seven days and notice the difference.
Inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s, hold 4s. Repeat 4 times when anxiety spikes. It works.
