Body & Mind
What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You
· 6 min read
The body and the mind are not separate systems that occasionally communicate. They are one integrated system, and the body frequently registers emotional experience before the conscious mind has processed it — sometimes before it has even noticed.
Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a stomach that misbehaves during stressful periods, fatigue that doesn't respond to rest, frequent infections during difficult life periods — these are not coincidences. They are the body's vocabulary for what the mind hasn't yet put into words.
Common Body-Mind Signals
- Chronic shoulder and neck tension: Often associated with carrying unexpressed burden or responsibility.
- Digestive disruption: The gut has its own nervous system and is highly responsive to anxiety and unresolved stress.
- Fatigue disproportionate to activity: Often signals emotional depletion rather than physical tiredness.
- Recurrent illness: Chronic stress suppresses immune function in measurable, well-documented ways.
Starting to Listen
A simple practice: at the end of each day, before sleep, scan your body from feet to head and note where tension or discomfort is present. Then ask: what am I carrying today that might be living there? Not to solve it immediately — just to name it. The body relaxes slightly when acknowledged. So does everything else.
